TESLA POWERSHARE · OCTOBER 2026

Your Model 3 or Model Y can now power your house. Here's exactly what that takes.

For two years, the honest answer to "can my Tesla back up my home?" was only if it's a Cybertruck. On October 6, 2026, that changed. Tesla announced that Powershare Home Backup — the feature that lets the car feed the house during an outage — is now available on the Model 3 and Model Y, the two best-selling EVs in America. We've been saying on this site that we don't install promises and we'd tell you the day this shipped. This is that day. Here is what Tesla actually said, what it requires, and what it means if one of these cars is in your driveway or on your order sheet.

What Tesla announced

Tesla's Powershare page now reads that Home Backup is available for "all Cybertruck vehicles, and all new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered on October 1, 2026 or later." Some Model 3 and Model Y built before that date have the hardware too — Tesla says "some, but not all" — and there's a simple way to find out: on the car's touchscreen, go to Software → Additional Vehicle Info. If you see "Powershare Support: Enabled," your car can do this. If you don't, it can't, and no software update will change that; the bidirectional hardware is built in at the factory.

The numbers: up to 11.5 kW of continuous power to the house, which is more than most homes draw at any one moment. Tesla's own estimate is that a Premium or Performance Model 3 or Y adds "over two days" of backup for a typical home using 30 kWh a day, starting from a 90% charge; the Standard trims add "up to two days." For comparison, a Powerwall 3 on its own holds 13.5 kWh, so the car brings five to six Powerwalls' worth of energy to a long outage.

What it requires — and this is the part that matters

Two things, and the first is the big one. You need a Powerwall 3. On the Cybertruck, Tesla offers a Powershare Gateway that lets the truck back up the house without a Powerwall. For the Model 3 and Model Y, Tesla does not offer that option: the Powerwall 3 is the piece that manages the handoff when the grid drops. Tesla says Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ support is "coming soon," and we'll update this page when it ships; today it's Powerwall 3 only. The second requirement is a Tesla Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector to plug into, which most Tesla owners already have.

Put those together and there are three situations:

Two more facts to keep the picture honest. Grid Support — selling power back to Dominion from the car — is not available on the Model 3 or Model Y; this is home backup only. And the Model S and Model X, now out of production, were never included and won't be.

What it means for your garage

If you ordered a Model 3 or Model Y on or after October 1, you're buying a vehicle with a house-sized backup battery built in — and whether you ever use it comes down to a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector in the right places. That makes this the moment to think about the house as a system: where the battery goes, whether your panel needs work, how the critical loads get separated, and what Dominion's rates do to the math once you can charge off-peak and ride out outages on the car. Those are the questions we answer in one visit, with the real price up front.

If your Tesla predates October, check the screen before you plan anything. If it says Enabled, everything above applies to you today. If it doesn't, a Powerwall 3 still gives you whole-home backup and off-peak savings on its own; it just won't be able to draw from the car.

And if you drive something else: GM's Ultium EVs back up a home through GM Energy, the Kia EV9 does it through the Wallbox Quasar 2, and both are working on Central Virginia homes now. Our vehicle-to-home page keeps the full compatibility table current, reviewed monthly.
